FOR THE HOMELAND!

CONGRESS OF RUSSIAN COMMUNITIES (KRO)

Overview: The electoral association of the "social-political movement" of that name. The leaders: Chairman of the Federation of Goods Producers of Russia, former secretary of the Security Council, Yury Skokov; General Aleksandr Lebed and Chairman of the Democratic Party of Russia, Sergei Glaziev. This organizationally loose bloc hoped to capitalize on General Lebed's charisma to outshine the CPRF and the LDPR to become leaders of the "opposition" (communists and Zhirinovsky) forces in the Duma.
Top three Candidates: Yury Skokov, 57, Chairman of the Board of the Center for Inter-Ethnic and Regional Problems, former Secretary of the RF Security Council, former First Vice Premier of the RSFSR, former People's Deputy of the USSR; Aleksandr Lebed, 45, deputy Chairman of the National Council of the Congress of Russian Communities (CRC), retired Lieutenant-General; and Sergei Glaziyev, former Foreign Trade Minister.
Political Orientation: Includes representatives of differing, sometimes opposing political views: the supporters of the full territorial restoration of the Soviet empire (Konstantin Zatulin, 37, Chairman of a State Duma committee, PRES Deputy in the State Duma, formerly a prominent businessman); National-Federalists (Yury Kalmykov) and National Separatists (Bashkir nationalist Marat Kulsharipov, Chuvash nationalist Atner Khuzangai); moderate Russian nationalists (Dmitry Rogozin, 32, Chairman of CRC executive committee and founder of CRC); socialists (Chairperson of the Socialist Workers Party Liudmila Vartazarova, Gennadiy Skliar); individual radical national patriots, "fighters against Zionism" (Aleksandr Turik from Irkutsk, Aleksandr Liulko from Novosibirsk); individual democrats (Sergei Trube, Nikolai Panov from Pskov); communists (Pyotr Sumin from Cheliabinsk); and Orthodox monarchists (Turik). Predominant in the bloc are the supporters of partial restoration of a supra-national (not ethnocratic) empire by peaceful means and a state-regulated market economy.
Leading Candidates: The above mentioned figures as well as Federation Council deputies Evgeniy Pavlov and Valery Rastorguev; head of the Association of the Veterans of the special commando group Alpha Sergei Goncharov; Chairman of the Russian Social-Liberal Party (and head of the Russian Alliance Movement) Vladimir Filin; Chairman of the Russian Bourgeois-Democratic Party (deputy head of the Russian Alliance) Evgeniy Butov, Chairman of the Tyumen Branch of Otechestvo Aleksandr Repetov.

STANISLAV GOVORUKHIN'S BLOC

Overview: Coalition of the Russian Christian Great Power Movement (known as the Christian-Democratic Movement before February 1995) headed by Viktor Aksiuchits, the People's Alliance Movement of Andrei Golovin, and the All-Russian Association of Trade Unions "Zashchita" of Yury Leonov (non-party deputy of the CPRF running as an independent). Informally, the bloc includes the Govorukhin wing of the Democratic Party of Russia and Aleksandr Krasnov's Party of Scientific and Technical Intelligentsia. It is a radical opposition organization consisting mainly of former radical anti-communist activists who have embraced equally radical "national-patriotism".
Top three Candidates: Film Director Stanislav Govorukhin; former secretary of the Constitutional Commission, Oleg Rumiantsev; V. Aksiuchits.
Leading Candidates: A. Golovin, A.Krasnov.
The bloc's campaign rallying cry is "Stop the criminal revolution".

FOR THE HOMELAND!

Overview: A bloc of the New Russia movement (Vladimir Polevanov), the People's Patriotic Party (the Afghan veterans party) led by Anatoly Gil, and the Russian Union of Afghan Veterans.
Leading Candidates: Vladimir Polevanov, former governor of the Amur region and later Chairman of State Property Committee. He has the support of the conservative wing in the President's staff and among the "power ministries" (Aleksandr Korzhakov, Mikhail Barsukov and Pavel Grachyov).
Top three Candidates: V.Polevanov, 46, briefly chairman of the State Property Committee (SPC) of the Russian Federation, and previously the head of the Amur region administration; Commander of Airborne Troops General Evgeniy Podkolzin, 59; Commander of the Black Sea Fleet Admiral Eduard Baltin, 59.
Political Orientation: Some believe that the bloc plays the role of "sensible patriots" who, according to V.Nikonov and S.Shakhrai, should be sought out and fostered within the "2 1/2 structure" (see NDR and the Rybkin Bloc above), but its vote-getting potential is small.
Leading Candidates: Chairman of the Russian Union of Afghanistan War Veterans Frantz Klintsevich, co-chairman of the "SOTSPROF" Trade Union (and vice president of the Levsha Party) Vasily Mokhov.
